The Laser Sailor

2011 Fall Report for D19

Here is the article that should be in the Fall 2011 issue of The Laser Sailor.  The good news is that I did get Jim Sunstrum's article on Uganda submitted.  The bad news is that I did not submit the D19 report.  It was completed and ready but I guess I never emailed it.  So our Winter report will be larger.  Here is a PDF of what I was supposed to send.

2010 Dick Tillman - Laser Clinic in Muskegon PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, August 5, 2010

A dozen sailors participated in an afternoon of lessons and drills in Laser boat setup and handling put on by Laser Master Dick Tillman.

Solid wind greeted the sailors, with average winds around 14 knots and puffs jumping as high as 20 knots. Many boats spent a part of their afternoon bottom

side up, but a great time was had by all!

After a short break, ten laser sailors headed back out for some racing. Even with a 5:30 start, the wind held above 12 knots, so there was plenty of speed and wipe outs.

True to his championship history, Dick won the day, but he was pressed hard (everyone wants to take a swing at the champ!).

Skipper Sail No. Race R1 R2 R3 R4 Total

Bob Rhodes 61089          9 10 9 6 34

After the boats were put away, we gathered for a lean in, with food and beverage provided by Kelly Griswold and Nicki Hanson ... thanks for cooking up some

great food!

All in all, it was a very productive and fun day with a great sailing gentleman

Summary from Tom Trautman:

Hello Laser Racers,

We have completed our 2010 Irish Summer Race Series and I wanted to thank everyone for your attendance and support. I’ve attached the results for everyone to review (pdf to be uploaded soon...).

Congratulations to Mac Jacob, Mac continues to be “the guy to beat”. For the fourth year in a row, Mac has finished in 1st place for the Summer Series and retains the perpetual Laser trophy. Mike Duff finished 2nd this year and George “The Hotdog Man” Peet finished in third. We sailed 10 events with a total of 36 races, had 14 boats registered and averaged about 7 boats on the line.

The funs not over yet, mark your calendar for Saturday October 2nd. This is the date for the Fourth Annual Frosty Mug Laser Race here in Harbor Springs. Racing will begin at 1:00 pm and there will be more details to follow.

There is a group of us that are going to continue to sail on Thursday evenings for some impromptu racing. If interested, give me a call or simply show up at Ford Park at 5:30 on Thursday evenings.

We hope to see the Little Traverse Bay Laser Fleet continue to grow. Please contact me if you have suggestions, comments or know of someone who would like to become involved. We have new Lasers available at sale pricing and I can certainly help someone find a used boat as well.

Thanks again for a wonderful season, smooth sailing and I hope to see everyone on October 2nd or sooner.

Sincerely,

 Boats Only

Tom Trautman

Below is the report from EJ O’Mara on his regatta this Spring.  We also already had the O’Day qualifier at Crescent which, unfortunately, had very light attendance.  I think making the commitment to go to the finals (Florida) keeps people away from the qualifier.

Gull Lake Yacht Club (www.glyc.org) is the venue for this year’s D19 Championship.  Gull Lake is a beautiful crystal clear, deep water lake 4 x 1 miles in size.  The facility includes a beach with life guards, showers, snack bar, full service bar & food facilities- great for families!  The Notice Of Regatta is posted at www.d19laser.org.

Schedule:  Be sure and go to www.d19laser.org for a more complete list of events and recent reports.

July 10-11 D19 District Championship – Gull Lake Yacht Club

Aug 28       Annual Lake Lansing Regatta - contact is Doug Carlson

Sep 18       GTYC Fall Regatta - contact is Mark Lyons

Lake Fenton Laser Regatta - EJ O'Mara Sailing Fundraiser

May 15, 2010 was the date for the Lake Fenton Laser Regatta- EJ O'Mara Sailing Fundraiser.  It was a beautiful day for the event with sunny skies and a 7-10 knot North Easterly. As sailors were arriving breakfast was set out and everyone got to enjoy a wonderful and hearty breakfast compliments of Mary O'Mara (mother).  At 10:30 AM the competitors launched and three solid races ensued.  Lunch was served on the water and with that extra time we were able to get three more races off thanks to the excellent work of the head race committee Dave Nickels.  At the end of the day awards were handed out to top three finishers and top junior.  After excluding myself from the results the finishes were, 1st Peter Johanson 2nd Urs Geiger T3rd Ariel O'Mara T3rd Mary Vorel and Top Junior Timothy Nickels.  They all got an awesome picture (compliments of Ariel O'Mara) in a nice wooden frame (compliments of Joe Abbott).

I think the best thing about the whole event was the support I received from Lake Fenton Sail Club and its members, my family, and all the friends that volunteered to help or just came out to support me.  I would like to give a special Thanks to the immediate O'Mara family, the Beckman family, the Oslund family, and Dave Nickels for which without them none of this would have been possible.

If you would like to still participate in this ongoing fundraiser but were not able to make it out to the actual regatta please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ! Also to keep up to date on the my most recent sailing activities you can visit my blog at www.ejomarasailing.blogspot.com .
